In the realm of health and wellness, you might have come across terms like "coaching" and "training," often used interchangeably. However, in the world of supporting breathing fitness and overall well-being, these words carry distinct meanings that can significantly impact your journey to a healthier life. As someone who specializes in both breathing training and coaching, I'm here to shed light on the crucial differences between the two, and explain why I have come to believe that coaching stands out as the transformative choice.
Discovering the Heart of Training
When you think of training, it's natural to associate it with exercises and routines. In the context of breathing, training involves learning specific techniques designed to improve your lung capacity and oxygenation. These techniques are key for honing your everyday breathing skills and ease, and creating a sense of discipline. Yet, they often follow a structured format that might not sync with your current habits and ability to be consistent.
Breathing training is like following a set route on a map—it gets you from point A to point B, but it might not consider your pace, limitations from your symptoms or your state of mind -- all factors that make your journey unique. It's essential to remember that wellness isn't just about reaching a destination. You need to feel comfortable and like you're making progress, or you'll likely quit.
Unveiling the Essence of Coaching
This is where coaching comes in—a path that personalizes your journey to wellness. Breathing coaching goes beyond teaching techniques; it's about fostering a holistic transformation that encompasses your physical, mental, and emotional capacity,
Unlike training, which can sometimes feel rigid and one-size-fits-all, coaching is designed to cater to your unique needs and aspirations.
Breathing coaching understands that your breathing patterns can reflect your inner state. Stress, anxiety, and past experiences can all influence how you breathe. Instead of simply instructing you on techniques, a breathing coach delves into these deeper layers, helping you unlock a better understanding of yourself and your well-being, and set realistic expectations to yield the best results.
Unlike other activities people set out to improve, we are breathing every minute of our lives -- 1,440 minutes a day! That's a potential setup for negative thinking and constant misery if we're constantly judging how we're doing.
In breathing training, we emphasize the importance of nasal breathing in all activities. But many of our students at the outset cannot breathe with their noses comfortably for even a minute. The way we each breathe is internally designed to maintain a blood pH based on the levels of oxygen and carbon dioxide that we have become accustomed to. For many people this is best shifted in a slow, consistent manner -- often by progressively mouth breathing slightly less each day until nasal breathing feels more manageable and sustainable -- to avoid side effects including dizziness.
If someone's expectations for fast progress are out of sync with their current condition, they need more than knowledge and training to succeed. Regular accountability for practicing behavior changes, reminders of hope, an emphasis on what's going well and a long-term view are in order.
Personalization: Your Path to Success
Personalization and meeting you where you actually are, is the cornerstone of breathing coaching. We all have different lifestyles, challenges, and goals, which is why a personalized approach is so vital. Breathing coaching puts you in the driver's seat. You decide the pace and the priorities to tailor your journey to your specific circumstances, with your coach providing knowledge, guidance and support that aligns with your individual needs.
Imagine having a breathing coach who not only teaches you techniques but also takes the time to understand your unique story and cater to your starting capacity. This personalized approach means that you'll be guided through a journey that resonates with you, addressing your specific concerns and helping you overcome any obstacles that might stand in your way.
Coaching goes beyond teaching you tangible skills; it empowers you to become more aware of your body's cues and signals. This is most important with breathing since it is invisible and intangible to most of us until we learn how to measure it. Through breathing coaching, you'll learn to recognize signs of stress, tension, or unease in your breathing patterns. This heightened awareness gives you the tools to manage your breathing and, by extension, your overall well-being.
The Connection That Transforms
Perhaps the most significant difference between breathing coaching and training is the transformative connection between you and your coach. A breathing coach becomes your ally, supporting you through every step of your journey. This relationship is built on trust, understanding, and shared goals.
Your breathing coach is there to listen, guide, and provide insights that can help you overcome challenges and celebrate successes. The personalized connection you establish with your coach creates a safe space for you to explore your concerns, aspirations, and progress.
As you embark on your path to better breathing and overall wellness, it's essential to recognize the distinction between breathing coaching and training. While training imparts techniques, coaching goes beyond to personalize your journey, empower you through mindfulness, and create a transformative connection that nurtures your growth.
Choosing breathing coaching is a decision to invest in yourself—to prioritize your well-being, embrace your uniqueness, and journey toward a healthier and more fulfilling life. Through coaching, you'll not only learn how to breathe optimally but also discover the power within you to live life to the fullest—one breath at a time.
